Madekwe was raised by an ethnically mixed family. Her father is a Nigerian-Swiss, while her mother was English. She was born in the south London Council Estate, and then went to The Brit School aged 14. The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art was where she received the BA in acting. While at the academy, she appeared in several stage productions such as the King Henry V playing Princess Katherine as well as Wuthering Heights portraying Catherine Earnshaw. Madekwe got her start in acting with a film titled Storm Damage. Since then she's made appearances in guest roles in films like Teachers, Doctors Casualty Drop Dead Gorgeous. Her first role in a film was Woody Allen's 2007 film Cassandra's Dream opposite Colin Farrell, Ewan McGregor. She then played Elisha, the BBC Three pilot drama, in West 10 LDN.
